PREPARING FOR YOUR RELOCATION WILL HELP REDUCE
THE STRESS
What to do before
moving day:
|
□ |
Get boxes
and packing materials. Local grocery stores can be a great
resource for boxes, especially produce boxes. |
|
□ |
Schedule
the moving truck or moving company well in advance. |
|
□ |
Contact the
local utility companies for shut-off: City & MDU
**DO NOT** shut these off before preoccupancy by the buyer.
You could risk pipes freezing or problems with scheduled
inspections. |
|
□ |
Contact
utility company for new property for transferring the service to
your name. |
|
□ |
Call the
phone company to schedule transferring of service. |
|
□ |
Call the
cable company to schedule transferring of service. |
|
□ |
Fill out
change of address forms with the Post Office. This can be
done in advance with a "begin" date. Remember to notify
magazines, credit card companies, banks, people on your
Christmas card list, etc. Rule of thumb for no charge
forwarding:
- First Class, Priority and Express Mail: 12 months unless
otherwise requested by mailer.
- Newspapers and Magazines: 60 days.
- Packages weighing 16 ounces or more: 12 months locally
(you pay forwarding charges if you move outside the local
area. If you do not want this class of mail forwarded,
contact your local Post Office).
|
|
□ |
Back-up
computer files prior to packing your computer and disconnecting
it. |
|
□ |
Do not pack
or move hazard materials including finger nail polish, paint,
varnish, cleaning materials. |
|
□ |
Keep kids
well informed on the process to help them feel secure about the
move. |
|
□ |
Start
researching doctors and schools and have the necessary records
transferred well in advance. |
